Choosing an Assessment
Which assessment is right for me or my child?
The ADHD & Mental Health Assessment is designed for concerns involving attention, anxiety, mood, emotions or behaviour. The Comprehensive Psychoeducational Assessment includes ADHD and mental health assessment plus cognitive skills (IQ testing), academic skills in reading, writing and math, and learning disability assessment. Choose the Autism Assessment whenever autism is one of the main questions. If you are unsure, contact us and we will help determine the most appropriate assessment before testing is booked.
Do all assessments include IQ, academic, and learning disability testing?
No. Cognitive skills (IQ testing), academic skills (reading, writing & math), and learning disability assessment (e.g., dyslexia) are included in the Comprehensive Psychoeducational and Autism Assessment Services.
Who do you assess?
We provide assessments for children, teens, post-secondary students and adults, depending on the assessment question, age, testing needs and service availability. If you are unsure whether we can assess your specific concern, contact us and we will confirm whether our services are a good fit.
Should I wait for an assessment through my child's school?
Public schools may provide psychoeducational assessment at no cost, but availability, wait times and the scope of assessment vary by school and school division. A private assessment may be appropriate when you want earlier access, broader testing, or an independent assessment and report.
Process & Timing
What is included in the assessment fee?
Your assessment fee is all-inclusive. It covers all required interviews, questionnaires, observations, testing, scoring, professional review, report preparation, and the virtual meeting to discuss results. If additional professional time or testing is needed to complete the assessment properly, there is no additional charge. Additional services requested outside the assessment are not included.
How soon can I get an appointment?
Appointments are often available within days or weeks. Availability varies by assessment type, testing format and location. Contact us or request a FREE consultation and we can confirm the current options.
How quickly will I receive the report?
Our goal is to provide the completed report within one week after all assessment appointments, required forms, requested records and payment are complete.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact Elite Psychology directly. Some insurance plans may require a medical doctor's referral or pre-approval for reimbursement, so we recommend checking your individual plan before booking.
Do you need information from a teacher or school?
Teacher or school information can be helpful for child and teen assessments because it provides information about how the individual functions in another setting. However, it is not always available - particularly during the summer months. We can usually complete the assessment using other sources of information when teacher input is unavailable. If teacher information is necessary for a particular assessment, we will let you know.
What happens after I receive the report?
Once you receive your report, we highly recommend scheduling the included virtual meeting to discuss the results, recommendations, diagnoses when applicable, and any questions you may have. The meeting is completely optional. If you feel the written report gives you everything you need, there is no requirement to attend a meeting.
Virtual & In-Person Testing
Are assessments available virtually or in person?
Depending on the assessment, age and individual needs, testing may be completed virtually, in person, or using a combination of both. We review suitability before testing and will recommend the format that is appropriate for the person and the measures being used.
Are virtual assessments valid?
Yes, when the person, assessment question and tests are appropriate for remote administration. We use standardized measures and procedures that are suitable for the selected testing format. If virtual testing would not provide sufficiently reliable information, we will recommend in-person or hybrid testing instead.
What do I need for a virtual assessment?
Virtual testing requires a quiet, private space, reliable internet, a computer with a camera and microphone, and a tablet (iPad preferred). We provide specific setup instructions before testing.
Diagnosis & Reports
Can you provide a diagnosis?
Yes, when the assessment findings support a diagnosis within the scope of the service being completed. A diagnosis is never guaranteed. Autism can only be diagnosed through the Autism Assessment Service.
Can the assessment help with medication?
When the assessment findings support it, we can provide a medication support letter summarizing relevant results for your medical doctor. Whether to pursue medication for a child is ultimately the parent or guardian's decision. If medication is pursued, the medical doctor determines whether it is medically appropriate and, if prescribed, the medication and dosage.
Can the Comprehensive Psychoeducational or Autism Assessment be used as part of an FASD assessment?
Yes. These assessments provide the psychological testing needed as part of a multidisciplinary FASD assessment. An Elite Psychology assessment does not independently diagnose FASD; additional multidisciplinary assessment is required.
How long is an assessment report valid?
There is no single expiry date that applies to every psychological assessment. Whether updated testing is needed depends on the person's age, whether their functioning has changed, and the requirements of the school, post-secondary institution, insurer, government program or other organization receiving the report.
Insurance, Funding & Disability Services
Will my insurance cover the assessment?
Coverage varies by insurance or benefit plan. Before booking, ask your provider whether psychological assessment is covered, the annual or lifetime maximum, whether pre-approval or a referral is required, and whether there are requirements regarding the professional providing or supervising the service. We provide a detailed receipt for the services provided.
Do you work with Jordan's Principle?
Yes. Elite Psychology works with Jordan's Principle referrals and can help with the assessment funding process for eligible children. Contact us before booking so we can confirm the appropriate process and documentation.
Can the assessment help with the Disability Tax Credit?
When applicable and supported by the assessment findings, completion of the psychological portion of a Disability Tax Credit form is included. Eligibility for the Disability Tax Credit is determined by the Canada Revenue Agency.
Can the Comprehensive Psychoeducational or Autism Assessment be used for disability services?
These assessments include psychological testing relevant to eligibility assessment for Children's Disability Services (CDS), Adult Disability Services (ADS), and/or Community Living Disability Services (CLDS). Final eligibility is determined by the applicable program.
Schools & Post-Secondary
Will schools, universities, doctors, or government programs accept the report?
Our reports are designed to provide the psychological information needed for educational planning, medical care, accommodation requests, disability services, and other applications. Each school, institution, medical doctor, agency, or government program determines its own requirements and makes its own final decisions. If an organization requires additional clarification or documentation after your assessment, contact us. We are happy to provide reasonable follow-up support, including a letter addressing specific documentation requirements when appropriate.
Privacy
How do you protect my privacy?
We use secure systems for assessment forms, records and reports and limit access to information to those involved in providing or administering the service. Standard email, text messaging and similar communication methods may not be fully secure, so detailed or sensitive clinical information should be submitted through the secure methods we provide.
